Chapter 6
Viviette felt unusually giddy as she climbed the last stairs of Rock Hallâs guest tower, Jaghar close behind her; even her haunting thoughts on Anzorâs violence had been shoved to the back of her mind for the first time today. Minutes before, according to the reports of Jagharâs people, Valmo and his wife had embarked on this same climb, and they hadnât come down yet. Now, on this floor where only the servants sometimes came to clean, two pairs of footsteps were visible in the faint layer of dust, a straight line to the narrow staircase that led to the enclosed space between the towerâs battlements.
As they passed that staircase, she heard Rittaâs voice cooing in Taavi â âOh, please, harder, Your Majestyâ¦â
Viviette barely kept her laughter down until she had safely closed the door of the deserted guest room with the broken window behind them. Even Jaghar was biting down a grin as he shook his head and whispered, âAccording to Madelena he dresses her up as the Empress every now and then.â
She doubled up laughing. It was hard to imagine anyone more different from the Empressâs broad-shouldered husband than Valmo, with his long nose and his sinewy limbs. Jaghar glanced upwards. Through the broken window, shreds of Rittaâs cooing still made their way in.
âTen minutes on average, according to Madelena.â
âWell,â Viviette said, supressing her giggling. âTime to get to work, then.â
He stepped closer and pulled an arm around her, his eyebrow raised. Just the pressure of his fingers in the small of her back called up memories of all other places where those same fingers had been engaged lately⦠Her face grew warmer. Judging by the twinkles in his eyes, he knew exactly what thoughts he was evoking in her.
âStill certain of the plan, Princess?â
How was she supposed to have any doubts if he touched her like that? Viviette raised an eyebrow back at him and gave him her most regal glare â not an easy feat, with his demanding caresses slowly sliding down her back.
âI didnât just hear you doubting my orders, did I, Spymaster?â
In response he clasped his fingers around the back of her neck and kissed her, bending her back so passionately that she would have fallen over if not for his hand still pinning her against him. Her mind went blank at once, delivering her to his embrace â her own orders, perhaps, but he was the one in control of her body now, and she knew how he delighted in that power⦠There was no getting away from his possessive touches, the unrelenting demands of his lips and fingers trailing along her spine. She clung to his chest, moaning as his hands clawed into her buttocks and pressed her against him. The smouldering hardness at his crotch made her quiver in anticipation.
He lifted her, still ravaging her mouth with his kisses, his arms mercilessly crumpling her skirts. Only when he threw her onto the roomâs unmade bed did his lips set her free.
